CHURCH HILL VOLUNTEERS DONATE TO KENT ISLAND HIGH SCHOOL

The Volunteers assisted the Kent Island High School on February 17th by providing our old stretcher to the nursing staff. The KIHS has a student who experiences seizures frequently while in school which requires the student to be taken to the nurse’s office. If the student is on the second floor, it requires several teachers to move him. Normally, KIHS calls for an EMS response from Kent Island VFD and QAC Paramedics. Seldomly, does the student require transport to the hospital as his condition doesn’t warrant hospitalization. The EMS personnel are usually utilized to assist with packaging him and moving him downstairs via their stretcher. He is then taken to the nurse’s office where he recovers from the seizure and either returns to class or is taken home by a parent. Having a member whose wife teaches at the KIHS, we learned of there situation and stepped up to provide a piece of equipment to transfer the student as needed. Assistant Chief Hurlock & EMS Director Carson loaded the stretcher into Ambulance 5 and delivered it to the school. Upon our arrival, we were informed while walking through the front doors; the student was in fact having a seizure in a room on the second floor. Both providers wheeled the stretcher to the elevator and arrived in the room to package him for transport down to the nurse’s office. After moving the student to a bed in the nurse’s office where he would recover, the nurse was given instruction on how to operate the stretcher. The Administrative Staff were very thankful for their new piece of equipment and thanked us for the donation.

While leaving the High School, Ambulance 5 was added to a Chest Pain call at Maryland Primary Care on Love Point Rd just down from the school. While assisting Medic 1 at that location, a second call was dispatched for Ambulance 10 and PM100 at the KIHS for an Asthma Patient. Ambulance 5 cleared the first call and responded back to the High School to assist PM100 with packaging and transfer to their unit. Ambulance 5 came available and returned to the Hilltop. The Church Hill Volunteers would like to wish the staff at KIHS the best of luck with their new acquisition.
